With the continued efforts at the federal level to further curtail the Second Amendment-protected rights of law-abiding American gun owners, many state politicians are taking action to ensure gun owners in their states aren’t affected. Utah sheriffs become the latest group to send a strong pro-gun message.
Utah Sheriffs Pledge to Protect 2A
In fact, the sheriffs in all 29 Utah counties recently signed a pledge to protect state residents from federal gun control efforts that would infringe on Utah’s right to keep and bear arms.
“Importantly, the Second Amendment of our divinely inspired constitution clearly states…‘the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed,’” the pledge says. “We hereby recognize a significant principle underlying the Second Amendment: the right to keep and bear arms is indispensable to the existence of a free people.”
Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen, who is president of the Utah Sheriff’s Association, was instrumental in the effort to get all sheriffs to sign the pledge, noting they weren’t addressing any particular legislation. Rather, they were simply stating that they recognize state gun owners have a constitutional right that must be protected.
Countering the President’s Message
Jensen has been quite vocal in the past about gun control efforts, including President Joe Biden’s penchant for using executive action to bypass elected representatives.
“I want all of our residents to know I believe earnestly ALL of our constitutional rights are guaranteed, and these rights are what make our country unique and the greatest place on earth to live, work and raise our families,” Jensen said in a statement to constituents earlier this year. “These rights that guarantee our freedoms are what I, as your elected sheriff, and our entire law enforcement family took an oath to support, obey and defend.”
Jensen is particularly adamant that the right to keep and bear arms be protected from the continued assault at the federal level.
“As your sheriff, I would like to address recent statements by President Biden concerning executive orders and the national discussion concerning gun control legislation,” Jensen continued. “Recently, President Biden talked about several proposed measures of gun control and plans to sign executive orders. Unconstitutional gun control in any measure will not happen in Cache County on my watch.”
Jensen concluded: “I will never support any action from the federal government or anyone else infringing on the rights we are all guaranteed through our constitution.”
Will Not Infringe
Earlier this month, Davis County Sheriff Kelly Sparks added a new policy for his deputies concerning firearms laws. The policy prohibits sheriff’s deputies and other department employees from enforcing certain measures that could infringe upon the right to bear arms in Utah.
Such efforts by law enforcement and pro-gun politicians at the county and state level take on more meaning as Biden and anti-gunners in Congress continue to push all manner of gun-ban schemes, which would wreck rights for gun owners across the nation. The recent Utah sheriffs statement looms particularly poignant given President Biden’s call on Wednesday demanding more executive actions concerning firearms ownership.
